Lost Abbey / Port Brewing 5th Anniversary Party

Celebrate our 5th Birthday with food, live music and new beer releases!

Come party with Port Brewing and The Lost Abbey and celebrate our 5th Anniversary on Saturday May 14, 2011.

5th Anniversary Celebration

Like last year we’ll be breaking the party into two sessions and limiting the number of guests so everyone can relax and enjoy themselves.

Items on tap for our daylong festivities include specialty kegs from the barrel archives, bottled beer releases, special barrelhouse tours, amazing street food from our in-house chefs, and live music from our two special guests — Kiera and the Lesbians and The Professors.

Brews, Food, Tours and Entertainment

Brews:
Following our anniversary tradition, not only will we be loading all our taps with the latest and greatest of our beers, but we’ll be releasing Anniversary — the fifth release of our hoppy, strong pale ale from the Port Brewing side of the house.

DOBO Tomme Arthur will also be delving into the storied Lost Abbey barrel and bottle archives to give guests an opportunity to sample rare brews from the past half-decade. (Look for special bottles, and secret taps all day long!)

Food:
For those of you who enjoy five star food, this year chef Jason Danderand will be heading the outdoor kitchen and barbequing, steaming, smoking, broiling and baking his way through a stunning assortment of street foods with a unique “San Diego” culinary spin.

Special Tours:
Lead Brewer and Keeper of the Barrels, Ryan Fields, and our new QAD, Gwen Conlley (née Flying Dog), will be hosting tours of our famous barrelhouse, giving guests an opportunity to see where our beers await the angels on high (and possibly learn a few of the secrets behind one of American craft brewing’s most famous barrel programs).

Music:
We’ll have two bands playing this year. The first session will feature the vintage-tinged garage, folk, rock and roll sounds of Kiera and the Lesbians. The second session will play host to our favorite lounge lizards, The Professors, who will be performing their own special brand of sophisticated Surf Music.

Photos from Carnevale 2011

Here’s the first in several series of photos from our Carnevale Masquerade last Saturday. (If you missed it, you missed a good one. Live music, masks, great beer, two whole pigs stuff with whole chickens stuffed with sausage, potatoes, apples and spices… ah, but we digress. Anyway…)

We’ll have more to post later as we sort through them looking for the best (as well as photos of all our masquerade winners). If you’ve got photos from Carnevale, feel free to send them to us or post them on Facebook and tag us in the photo. We’ll make sure to add them to our gallery!

Carnevale Masquerade Updates

A couple of exciting updates for our Carnevale di Lost Abbey Masquerade ball & release celebration next week. First, we now have the complete menu:

  • Appetizers: Rustic Cheeses & Crackers
  • Course 1: Fresh Crab Salad
  • Course 2: Louisiana Sausage & Chicken Gumbo
  • Course 3: Whole smoked pig with Serpent’s Stout glaze and Crisp vinaigrette cole slaw
  • Course 4: Hot Bread Pudding with Angel’s Share sauce

Appetizers begin at 7:15pm and dinner should start around 8pm with courses following every 20 minutes or so. (Many thanks to chefs Steve O. and Jason D. for jumping in and lending their skilled culinary hands to help us out for the evening!)

Masquerade Competition
In true Venetian masquerade style, we will also be holding a masquerade competition. A group of secret judges will name a number of winners for the evening, including:

  • Best mask – for most elaborate, interesting or intriguing Carnevale mask

Judging, naturally, begins upon arrival, winners will be announced at the ceremony shortly after 10pm.

Live Music
Once again, we’re pleased to announce that the brew house will be bathed in the sultry yet sensational surf lounge sounds of the Professors. They’ve been in the studio recently working on a new album, so we’re hoping to hear a few new cuts before they take off on their big U.S. tour this summer. (More info on their website here: http://www.theprofessorslounge.com/)

More Info & Details
As always, the food, music and fun are free to everyone who shows up in mask and costume ($10 for those who don’t). All the details are on the Lost Abbey website here: Carnevale di Lost Abbey Masquerade Ball 2011

The “Other” T.E.A. Party Election Results

There was quite a voted turnout for the “Other TEA Party” last night. Fortunately there were no hanging chads, voting machine malfunctions or bad ballots, so the count was quick and easy.

The TEA Party Duck

Of a total of 210 votes cast, TEA 1, a light, lemony sour beer walked away the victor. Many remember a version of this beer premiered as the “Arnold Palmer” TEA at Stone Brewing’s 14th Anniverary celebration this past August.

As the winner, TEA 1 will be bottled as Veritas 008 and released at our Barrel Party Night on November 13, 2010. (Unfortunately, the Barrel Party is sold out, but if you were lucky enough to get a ticket, you’ll be receiving a bottle of Veritas 008 that evening.)

TEA 6 also had a strong showing, and an impromptu blend of TEA 2 and TEA 6 was very popular, so it’s quite possible that 6, or a blended version thereof, may make an appearance again some time in the future.

Here’s a tally of the final results:

Candidate Votes Description
TEA 1 74 (36%) Mellow Yellow (French Oak barrel-aged Amigo) with fresh lemon zest and Black Tea
TEA 2 28 (13%) Avant Garde Farmhouse Ale with Caramel Apple Rooibos Tea
TEA 3 22 (10%) Mongo Double IPA with Mango Ceylon Black Tea
TEA 4 30 (14%) Red Barn Saison with Orange Ginger Mint Tea
TEA 5 4 (2%) Red Barn Saison with Ginger Lemon Grass Green Tea
TEA 6 52 (25%) Old Viscosity with Green Rooibos Plantain Coconut Tea

Thanks again to everyone who turned out for the vote, and to our friends at the Republic of Tea for providing the teas we used.

T.E.A. Party Update — What we’ll be tasting

Tonight is the “Other” T.E.A. party and our brewers have released the final list of the Traditional Experimental Ales (T.E.A.s) candidates. And what a wide-ranging slate it is. From Plantain and Coconut stouts to Caramel Apple Ales, everyone of these presents a palate pleasing, puckering, and possibly perplexing, party platform that you partisans can get behind. (Or not.)

Here’s the list of T.E.A. Party candidates we’ll be presenting for your consideration tonight:

  1. TEA 1 — Mellow Yellow (French Oak barrel-aged Amigo) with fresh lemon zest and Black Tea
  2. TEA 2 — Avant Garde Farmhouse Ale with Caramel Apple Rooibos Tea
  3. TEA 3 — Mongo Double IPA with Mango Ceylon Black Tea
  4. TEA 4 — Red Barn Saison with Orange Ginger Mint Tea
  5. TEA 5 — Red Barn Saison with Ginger Lemon Grass Green Tea
  6. TEA 6 — Old Viscosity with Green Rooibos Plantain Coconut Tea

It’s up to you to exercise your rights, so get out and vote! Polls open at 6pm in the Lost Abbey tasting room and close promptly at 9pm. Be there and vote for your favorite beer!

More information on the time, place, costs, etc. is on our website here: The Other Tea Party: You Decide

PS: Many thanks to our friends at the Republic of Tea for providing the Teas we’re partying with. Visit them online at www.republicoftea.com

Photo Gallery: Boos N’ Brews Night

Every year we hold our annual Boos N’ Brews night just before Halloween. It’s a family-friendly night of pizza, beers, and carving Jack o’ Lanterns. (The creativity of our patrons never ceases to amaze us.) This year we held the event on Friday, October 29 and had a great turn out. If you were there, thanks for coming in. And if you weren’t well, here’s a few photos of what you missed:

Get there from here: How to get from Lost Abbey to Stone’s 14th Anniversary Party

Want to go to Lost Abbey’s Brunch and Stone Brewing’s 14th Anniversary? Don’t feel like worrying about driving or fighting for parking? Here’s how get there from here — and vice versa — sans automobile.

So you’re going to the Stone Brewing 14th Anniversary celebration at Cal State San Marcos on Saturday August 21st, and you’d like to drop by Lost Abbey to enjoy the brunch and perhaps a pensive word or two over a beer in the Abbey before you head off to attend your Session. Problem is, you really don’t want to hassle with the hassles of driving and beer festivaling between the two locations.

Good news. You don’t have to.

The Lost Abbey is actually very close to the party’s location at Cal state San Marcos (a mere 4,800 ft as the crow flies), and there’s a number of options including the train, bike trails and walking paths that are just about as quick as driving your car between places. Here’s how to get there from here (or vice versa) without climbing in a car:

The Train

One of the best kept secrets around here is the Sprinter — a light rail system that runs between Oceanside on the coast, and Escondido inland. You can hop on the train at San Marcos city center (Lost Abbey’s station) and off it again 3 minutes later at Cal State San Marcos (for the festival). The Sprinter is also bike friendly, so if you’d rather pedal than hoof it, you can.

Lost Abbey is a few minute(s) walk from the San Marcos City Center station, as is the Cal State San Marcos station from the festival. With a bike it’s less than half that time.

Trains run once an hour and the fare is $2 each way, or you can buy a $5 round trip pass that will take you from Oceanside to Escondido and back again (very convenient if you’d rather leave your car at the transit station or if you’re going all train via the Coaster, MetroLink or Amtrak).

Tip: Take the Inland Rail Trail (it’s on the map) to/from Sprinter and Lost Abbey. The trail avoids the street lights and a steep hill, so you’ll travel all that much quicker.

MAP: Travel via the Sprinter

Walking / Biking

If you’re into the whole human-powered thing, it’s still pretty easy to go between Lost Abbey and the Party just using your feet or a bike. (The distance is actually shorter than driving because you can cut through the parking lots and use the sidewalks and bike paths to avoid car routes.) If you’re driving and then hoofing/pedaling, make sure to park your car at Cal State San Marcos early and roll down the hill to Lost Abbey. You can have breakfast and burn a few carbs going back to the Stone event. When your Session is over your car will be waiting nearby.

Tip: Cut through the Old Spaghetti Factory / LA Fitness parking lot between Twin Oaks & Rancheros (it’s on the map). Cars have to drive around it, but you’ll cut 1/2 a mile off your trip each way.

Christmas in July Guest List Registration

Have a Pint with Santa and help support Toys for Tots

In order to keep things comfortable in the brewery at our 2010 Christmas in July celebration and fundraiser we’re limiting each session to a maximum of 300 people. As a result, we’re asking folks who are planning on attending to RSVP by adding themselves to our guest list.

Getting on the guest list is easy. Just complete the form below, choosing your session and how many people will be in your party. Once you’ve completed the form your name will be added to the guest list for the session you selected.

(NOTE: Yes, it will still be possible to get into the event if you’re not on the guest list, so long as there’s fewer than 300 people registered for that session. However if we reach capacity, priority will be given to those on the list. As such, it’s in your best interest to do so.)
